Speaking of long station names, I think one of the reasons why they didn't name Tuscany station "Rocky Ridge/Tuscany" is that the name was too long to fit on the train destination signage.
Except the boneheads at the city would just call it that anyways then stick Rocky Ridge or Tuscany on the sign. That's what they do with Somerset - Bridlewood, the signs just say "Somerset"

And yet they can somehow fit "City Hall/Bow Valley College station" on a sign? I doubt it was just because of the length of the name.

Just Somerset makes sense to me, though if they were to add a second name I would have thought Sundance would have made more sense.

What does the reference to Lacombe even mean at Fish Creek - Lacombe Station?

McKnight-Westwinds also seems a little odd, though I'm not particularly familiar with the area.

Father Albert Lacombe. He served at the nearby St. Patrick's Church. Those historic structures in Midnapore at St. Mary's University are also named after him: Lacombe Home.

There's a Westwinds Blvd next to the station, but yeah, both Westwinds park and McKnight blvd are like 1.5 km away.

Count me as another one who doesn’t like the long, hyphenated station names, it’s just stupid.

And why isn’t Banff Trail called “Stadium” ?

Speaking of station names, the city had been aiming to include post secondary institutions into the names (Bow Valley College) but the feedback for including St Mary's University was overwhelmingly negative (too small, private, religious school, not actually serviced by the station, etc).
Has the city officially moved on from this idea, or are they still entertaining it?

I get the street names downtown because the buildings change hands and get renamed and you're stuck catching up with that. Otherwise, pick one word max two word names. Who didn't know Bow Valley College was at City Hall.

And St. Mary's isn't happening.

Didn’t BVC pay for the change? Or is my memory failing me.
What should've been the city's response: No thank you, we prefer simple station names that aren't everything to everybody.

To talk about the Green Line:
Its station names are good until you get to what use to be 4th Street. Like just call it Grand Central.

Preemptively naming it Grand Central before a shovel is in the ground, on the other side of things, is tempting fate to have it remain standalone for all of time...
Event Centre until the doors open on a GC then adjust accordingly

I can see how we got in this mess after this conversation, naming is hard with so many options :) From my perspective, its following a rule-based approach for 95% of the system:

Default should be the connecting road name (39 Ave S, Anderson, Southland etc). Exceptions should be:
  1. If some obviously regionally large, permanent, year round destination exists at the station (Chinook, University count - stampede doesn't unless you call it Stampede Park etc.)
  2. It should never have a combined name ( no "Downtown West - Kerby")
  3. Name it after a community if destination is that community, or road name is too minor or too confusing due to design (Sunnyside because 3 Ave N would be confusing, there's 3 stations on Memorial Drive, but only one station with it in the name for some reason)
  4. If absolutely must use a hyphen or a slash, use only one type of character in the system, don't mix and match!

Some examples:
CurrentNew
Grand Central / Event Centre Victoria Park or Central
Victoria Park / Stampede 17 Avenue S or Exhibition North
Erlton / Stampede25 Avenue S or Exhibition South
Downtown West - Kerby11 Street W
Barlow / Max BellBarlow or Max Bell
Bridgeland/MemorialBridgeland

Since Grand Central was for the New York Central Railroad, we should think of what name the Banff-Downtown-YYC-Red Deer-YEG-Edmonton system might have.

Banff Central might confuse people, but no more than Grand Central. Bow Central would be worse. Pacific Central is already used in Vancouver, Union in Toronto. Edmonton Central, confusing. Calgary Junction? Banff Junction?

I think Elbow Landing would be fun. It would connect the Bow Line to Banff and the Nose Line to YYC.

Not to steal from the place just to the north but Grand Central needs to be Confluence Station. It is both a landmark in the area and it will be the confluence of many lines, including the Green Line.

I would also try not to be too cute with the line names. I like the Banff Line but I would call the one going north Nose Creek Line. Both of those names are exactly what they are.
