Calgary Flames Official Thread

Going into an era of the most potential since Johnny, Monny, and Matthew looked like legitimate NHL stars.

That got messed by thinking they were ahead of schedule after a crazy run into the playoffs. It is up to Conroy and crew to hold their nerve and build for prolonged contention, not a flash in the pan.

We won't know how this new era is shaping up until after the first season in the new building (Spring '28). By then whoever we drafted this summer and the picks before that should be rounding into forum. That is also likely the time Backlund retires and a new captain emerges. Still lots to look forward to until then. Weirdly success can't be measured in wins and losses but player development. Very curious to see how it goes.

We have an absolute ton of draft capital this year (and the next couple), so hopefully the scouts do their job well.
This year we have:
  • High first round (our own)
  • Mid-to-late first (Vegas)
  • Two high seconds (ours, Rangers)
  • Two mid seconds (Utah, Sens)
  • Two high thirds (ours, Canucks)
Plausibly 8 of the top 70 or so picks.
In the next three drafts, we have six first round picks and eight second round picks! (Although the later firsts and seconds are Avs and Vegas, so probably late ones.)
This is precisely what I’ve been hoping for. Another loss last night and things keep looking better. I hope the scouting staff can take advantage.

Good point about the lack of pressure, this time of year a lot of paper tigers come out of the jungle. Could also be that the team is a bit looser since the trade deadline has passed. The team looks like it is having fun, I think Backlund is a serious guy, but I also think he's the type to allow guys to be who they are.

Gridin has looked pretty great, and he's a late first 2024 pick. The primary assist on the OT winner and the pass to Coronato the game before, he's not just getting lucky on secondary points.

They have a good rebuilding mix. Guys like Parekh, Gridin, Brz are playing big roles. Most of the older guys are past their prime (Backlund Coleman) or enjoying much more playing time than they would elsewhere (Frost, Farabee, Strome, etc.) that no one really feels like they're wasting away their contending window on a bad team.

The Flames are building depth, they just need that big stud of a player that we don't have yet. This is the opposite of the Oilers rebuild where they just loaded up on top picks but never really had the supporting cast.
