I'm reserving judgement for the black until it's finished. The day I took the pics, it didn't really look great, but I saw the building again yesterday and it looked better. Anxious to see what the white is. I hope it's regular flat panelled Alucobond, or something along those lines.

Does anyone else get the sense that there's a little too much white panelling going up in the East Village? The neighbourhood is really taking shape, but it's a touch monochromatic.

There is a fair bit of the same material being used on the projects. Verve and N3 and The Hat are similar to Evolution and First. I saw the plans for East Village Courtyard and it looks different from the others, and INK is somewhat different looking. I suspect that with the slowdown in the economy it may delay projects enough that some of the other parcels are developed with different styles.

I totally understand your line of thought. I've wondered about that myself.

Because most of EV is getting built at the same time it'll have a common look which in this case will be white and gray. Hopefully there will be some variation on future buildings.

I drove by earlier today, at it looks kinda nice right now because,

A) We don't have a whole tonne of buildings through out the city that so closely resemble those underway in the East Village. (Yet! The Guardian(s) would look at home a few blocks north, and some of the stuff underway around 1st Street SW is in a similar vein.)

B) I still have a mental image of what it used to look like. :(

C) There is still quite a bit of room for development.

D) The NMC/Studio Bell is very much not white.

What I'm hoping is that like you say, future projects will try to go in a different angle. I like what Ink brings to the table. There aren't too many hot pink buildings in Calgary. I'd like to see a few more... colourful buildings that is. We don't need toooo many hot pink ones.

In a future world where all the developers ignore their surroundings and just make white building after white building, that could be pretty ugly. We may as well rename the EV the Storm Trooper District in that case.

Even the finished parts look unfinished. It just looks terrible.
