DP for phase 2 is approved.

Didn't see that coming. Another major cultural institution project about to start! 🥳

And another crane!!! 🥳🥳🥳

Edit: ah shit now I'm seeing the previous comments. Well, whatever. I'll be cautiously optimistic. Stranger things have happened.

DP not approved but submitted, so still good news and a very positive sign as it costs a lot of money to prepare and submit a DP drawing package, along with the fees etc.

These new drawings look nothing like the original ones on the first page. Looks like there is no new building addition facing the river anymore, it’s all on the other side.

I know I often complain about Calgary's bizarre obsessions with unconventional roof designs on public institutions, but kind of like it in this situation. I also like how the bizarrely oversized and unnecessary surface parking lot is going away for more appropriate landscaping for an urban institutions. Here's the current state:

Yeah kind of frustrating that it seems to be turning its back to the river. Doesn't bode well for the potential for 6th Ave to be reduced (or eliminated entirely). That design even shows a berm totally blocking the site from the street, which makes sense given its current condition but struggles against a potential future condition where the river walk extends even further past the site.

I guess the new design allows for improved access from the C-Train. But not sure how much use the new plaza will get with 5 lanes of traffic separating it from Riverwalk?

Looks super nice, I especially adore the landscaping oppposite the RiverWalk West project. But I cannot understand the point of running a 4-lane highway between them, it decimates the value of the area.

I'd realign Bow Trail to flow directly into 9th avenue, opening up quite literally billions of dollars in prime riverfront developable land in the West Village. We don't need highways in the middle of downtown.

Not sure there will ever be a meaningful connection between this area and the river sadly, Bow Tr. isn't going anywhere, unless they bury it and I think that's a non started based on cost and flood risk. If they can make sure this connects well to the west end at least, then I'm happy with that. Once West Village becomes a thing, a good connection there is critical, but the clusterfuck interchange at 14th will need some though.
