Calgary Buildings Lost to History

Not really about buildings but the City's website with historical air photos has added a ton of new layers:

1953, 1957, 1962, 1966, 1969, 1972, and 1975

Before there was a big gap with 1948 and then 1979, skipping all of the phases of the oil boom demolitions.

Thanks for posting. For a Calgary without parking lots, check out 1957. The last aerial before they became ubiquitous everywhere in the core.

2020 - ~6 booms later and we still got some work to do.

It would have been so much better if we had a smaller commercial core, and then a Beltline type neighbour hood where the single family houses once stood. It's such a shame.

Would have been cool to have retained some of the blocks of houses and had a Yorkville-like shopping street

We should see how many houses we can find remaining downtown. Here are a couple peaked roofs you can see along Centre Street in Chinatown. There's also a handful remaining in the West Village. Some were demolished within the last few years.

Those looked pretty cool originally

Not quite in the same vein of this thread, but looking at the late 60s/early 70s, was that a drive in cinema where the Anderson train garage is now? It's probably clearest in the 1969 imagery.

There was a drive in movie theatre in that area in the 70's. I don't remember the exact location, but Anderson LRT sounds about right.

Great catch! Looks like it was demolished in the late-70s to make way for the garage.
