Just a quick question. Can someone explain the difference between a NIMBY and the haters on this site? Both don’t want things built because of small superficial or made up in their own mind reasons.
NIMBYs don't want anything that is slightly different than what they have, being critical of bad design is just pushing for higher quality buildings and cityscape. Apples and oranges...

When the experts on this page say not to build something because they don’t like the design then IMHO they are the same as NIMBY’s. We need stuff built and it all doesn’t have to be perfect.

While I think this buildings is boring looking and sorta ugly, as long as not too many are being built to this standard then whatever. Calgary for the most part has pretty nice buildings, and some unique iconic ones. This is really the only widely hated highrise.

The denser the inner city the higher the push for better looking buildings will happen as there are kless spaces to build

I don't think anyone said to not build it, just that they wouldn't be disappointed if they didn't build it on account of the mediocre design. NIMBYs don't want any change ever, we just don't want change to be the cheapest most boring building possible. Not being perfect is fine, but this is garbage and the developer / architect should definitely try harder. I think the fact that most people will call a building like this "decent filler" is proof positive that NIMBYism is not what is happening here.

A few said don’t build it. Just look before my original comment. That’s the reason I wrote my comment.
Besides superficial treatments on the outside of the building there’s not much wrong with this building. It provides “cheaper” rentals than most of the high end stuff getting built. To me that’s what Beltline and the Core needs. Plus it brings more people to the area, which brings more restaurants, retail etc.

I get what you are saying Golfing Guy. Happy this is a parking lot getting replaced by purpose-built rental. Not a fan of the elevations and colour choices. I think the multi-coloured balconies and odd colour changes for no particular reason are not a style that will age well. It is also probably not all that cheap to do the balconies and the colour changes either. I prefer when buildings understand what they are and just focus on simplicity and a decent first couple of stories (1-3). I would rather see this look more like The Morrison by Western Securities that put the better looking parts of the design where they should be and showed restraint in the tower portion.

Happy a parking lot is getting replaced, wish the design showed more restraint and I think we would have a building that looks better over time and doesnt age itself as soon as it is built. I think this Childrens Hospital approach to architecture and colour selection will not be looked at favourably as time passes. Please build it and hide it with big trees.

I'll happily be labelled a NIMBY on this one. It's a shit design, and I'd rather wait out the few more years of parking for something better. Frustratingly it could easily be upgraded to "merely boring" if they just toned down the colour scheme...but since they're not, shit it remains in my eyes.

Standards. We all need them.

Unless we start demanding Vancouver prices, we will never be beyond cheap buildings like this. I'll take this crap over $1500/sqft and up...
But it doesn't cost anything to have a decent color scheme. In fact it would literally be cheaper to paint it one solid color.
