The exact words from the guy on site were "it's coming down any day now. They're going to cut it in half and they're putting a tower on top like right away."

They may be planning to go ahead with both towers simultaneously? Or... isn't there only a DP for tower 1?

Interior demolition looks to be finished. Structural demolition definitely about to start.

You are correct, the DP is only for the first tower. The amenity area, parkade ramp and waste & recycling for the tower will encroach into the footprint of the Transalta building so that's why part of the building is to be demolished so the site guy is correct. But the good news is the DP for that tower has been approved so we will likely be seeing construction start early in the new year.
 
We will soon see if they're taking out or keeping the parkade. I cannot think (some of the longer term forum'ers might know) has there been a building that had its parkade removed in Calgary?
 
The tower that was demolished for Manulife Place/707 fifth definitely had a parking garage underneath.
 
I know I'm in the minority, but I still like the 80s office building portion. It has that retro 80s-future vibe (I can picture it being the HQ of some fictional tech corporation on McGyver). It would probably make some sweet loft conversions.
