We don't have a climate change thread but this also has economic implications. Instead of finding a buyer as was rumored, the federal government plans on keeping the TMX pipeline to generate revenue to pay for climate change initiatives. At least they are thinking beyond adding more taxes to pay for them. I guess the tax increases will be going to pay down the federal debt whenever they get around to being concerned about it.
If the feds are really serious about revenue generation then maybe they will get behind maximizing oil sands production to ensure TMX as well as our other pipelines maximize capacity. It would also help if they became an ambassador for 'clean, ethical oil' so that we attract more countries for our energy products.

So, the Minister didn't say that. Revenue from the pipeline is mostly indirect in the form of higher corporate taxes both for the oil in it itself, and in narrower differentials for all oil produced in the basin.

And as said before, we've been selling the clean, ethical oil angle for at least a decade, and no one is buying.

Continuing to own the pipeline would be a huge conflict of interest, much as holding onto shares of GM and Chrysler would have been post Financial Crisis.

I' be surprised if TMX doesn't loose money as government mismanages everything always.
 

After Biden killed Keystone XL, the hypocrisy of this action is stunning. The U.S. will take more Saudi oil as long as it is cheaper and pump prices don't anger Americans. This has long been a problem in the U.S. For some reason, citizens think when gas prices get too high, they should look to their president to do something about it. Everything else they buy can be going up in price but gasoline for some reason is a national crisis.

H1 VC deals by city. The big positive is that we are third in the number of deals which indicates that early stage is getting some much needed love.

Despite much opposition, Line 3 was completed and is operating now with expanded capacity ... quietly.
However Line 5 through Michigan is still in the news. Canada had to invoke the 1977 treaty between the two countries. Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed 'disappointment' in the Canadian government for doing this .... what???? .... halting what she is trying to do and what the treaty was designed to do ... prevent the shut down or disruption of infrastructure between the two countries.
She is determined to get this dispute between her state and Enbridge, moved from federal courts to state courts where she knows all it takes is one sympathetic judge to rule in her favour. She is also looking for alternate supply sources for propane which Michigan is dependent on Line 5 to deliver.
This issue will probably gain more traction after the oil spill off the coast of California.
