The UCP is out of control and acting like insane Florida or Texas Republicans. I can’t believe this is real. If they want to recall councillors they should start with Sean Chu. But he’s on their ‘team’ so that won’t happen. That horrible potato faced witch needs to be checked soon. Just wait until Poilievre becomes PM and we have this crap at a Federal level too.

Not stoked about the Province trying to gain power over cities. Danielle Smith seems eager to grab power wherever she can, especially if it's coming from progressives. Article
I heard another perspective on this: Cities can actually use this legislation as a bit of crutch. It use to be the mayor and council who you could squarely blame, now, talk to the province. The city should also upload everything that isn't their responsibility to the province.

(City to Province) Oh, you want more responsibility? How about you actually take care of mental health and addiction, housing, crime, etc.

(Province to the City) - perhaps you should quiet down, or we will leak a ton of opposition attacks on you, get our friends in local media to run op-eds against you and soon city council will appear incompetent, dishonest or corrupt. Then we'd have no choice but to investigate "disfunction" at the municipal level in the "public interest".

So the way it is now?

Article on the recent NDP debate here in Calgary.

A couple of interesting points from the article.

The sense Nenshi is the front-runner gets amplified when nobody is dredging up controversial decisions from Hoffman's past, or former justice minister Kathleen Ganley's,
or McGowan's as a labour leader. (Calahoo Stonehouse is a first-term MLA.)

On Sunday, the party will reveal the number of members eligible to vote for leader, and sources have told CBC that it surpasses 85,000
— several times greater than what it was at the point Notley announced her resignation in January.

Insiders also say that the lion's share of members are Calgarians, the town of Nenshi and Ganley.
That's a massively new orbit for the Alberta NDP, which had its core in Edmonton in the Notley years, and in the decades before it.

Settle down there socialist.

Lmao! Sister, almost all of us on here are socialists. At least left of centre. It’s the 2020s… on an urban development forum. How could you possibly think it wouldn’t be largely populated by progressives? 🤣

All indications are that Nenshi will be the new NDP leader. Anything can happen, but since he threw his ring into the hat, the number of Calgary memberships went way up, and as a result there are now more party memberships in Calgary than in Edmonton. If I were a betting man, I'd say Nenshi will be running in the next election.

I'd say Nenshi will be our next Premier!
Only if he can do better in Calgary than did Notley. I'd be interested in an overlay showing showing wards that voted for Nenshi and those than voted NDP. I suspect a high correlation. I doubt a Nenshi led NDP will win much south of Glenmore.
