Really happy about this one. Even though Parkdale is inner-city now it still kind of reflects its original build as the 'edge of town' with just a tiny half block commercial area. Parkdale always seemed like a bit of a commercial dead zone between the shops on 19th St and the large commercial...

Calgary Imagery historic airphoto site discussion thread

So this showed up on the Calgary subreddit but no one had a definitive answer This property https://www.google.com/maps/@51.0480101,-113.9963983,332m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDUxMS4wIKXMDSoJLDEwMjExNDUzSAFQAw%3D%3D At one time (around 1957-1988) was open field with this structure...

    General Construction Updates

They were petitioning against the new building. This one had no plan, as far as we know it is destined to be a vacant lot.

They've cracked the code. Give everyone eviction notices, apply for a demolition permit which is issued 3 days later and demolish. No land use change, no building permit application, no public hearings, just quick and easy demo. I'm assuming every heritage site in the city is now at high risk of...

    Calgary 2019 Civic Census

They just need to get an actual downtown going. Fill in the vacant lots in the commercial core. But meh, to me Airdrie is Alberta's Mississauga. Complete with a downtown anchored by a shopping mall, just without all of the downtown towers...yet

re: North Hill mall and its weirdness, it's kind of amazing that's it's still a functioning mall being that it's almost 70 years old (1958)

    Chinook Centre Developments

There also used to be a strip right on MacLeod Trail I'm not exactly sure of the purpose of those homes but the rectangular building at the bottom of the aerial photo was a brewery so it may have been for workers there. By the early 1950s it was a full on community but the Macleod Tr homes...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I believe it is being demolished as the new building has a different form than the original vs What it does appear to be doing is reflecting the architectural style

And the only blocks downtown that have any life are the blocks that aren't like that And that frontage is one of the least active parts of Stephen Avenue.

    61st Ave Residential | 64m | 19s | Cadillac Fairview | Zeidler

Good call being that it's already Manchester residential community's commercial strip and it intersects with the LRT station.

    61st Ave Residential | 64m | 19s | Cadillac Fairview | Zeidler

It looks like the west half of the NW building (the one that fronts 60th ave) has ground level units with patios so that least that should provide some decent non-communist frontage.

    61st Ave Residential | 64m | 19s | Cadillac Fairview | Zeidler

Is there any kind of master plan for this area that lays out future retail corridors etc or is it just 'we'll get what we get' ? Edit: I suppose the 2 natural corridors would be 61st and 58th. But it would be good to set out a North/South one as well

Yeah the problem with most commemorations is you need to go into a lobby or something to see it. I think at least some of this will be public facing.

    Beltline Block | 118m | 36s | ONE Properties | Gibbs Gage

I'm looking forward to this, the 1st St frontage has always been a dead zone for what should be one of the key Beltline commercial streets. Plus new built in customers for retail is a plus.
