    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I don't know about you guys, but I'm starting to think the Vic park barns are just fine.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I've tried to submit a couple of proposals for government contracts before, and just the process of submission alone made my brain hurt. It was needlessly byzantine, and this was for a relatively simple graphic design project... I can't even imagine what it's like for something like a building.

If only it was white brick, that would be the ultimate.

Sucks, but residential above a fire station always seemed a bit of an odd proposition to me.

What's the price on that sucker? Looks great, but not sure that's in the cards.

A bigger plaza around the library sounds nice in theory, but I'm glad they didn't got for it as I think it would've ended up being an empty wasteland. Apart from the library itself, what exactly would be the draw to hang out at that location? Every successful plaza has a perimeter of things that...

Ha, yeah I guess it's all relative to the market and one's personal expectations within that market. Compared to what you see in Edmonton or Saskatoon or something, this is still pretty good. Compared to what you typically see in Vancouver or Toronto, this is pretty mediocre. This is probably an...

    Calgary's Residential Highrise Boom 2000 - 2025 and Beyond

Honestly it looked pretty bad from day 1. If they at least went all-in on the "chateau" look with nice materials/details, that would be one thing...but it's always looked like a cheap stretched version of a 90's McMansion.

I was expecting 2 banks and 3 Shoppers Drug Marts.

I'm not as excited about the design as the rest of you (looks a little overwrought to me) but should be an upgrade nonetheless.

Im not really seeing the issue with giant banners. If those are designed nicely, those can be effective too.

Much preferred over heritage buildings doing so.

Love those Odyssey Towers and A-Frames! I wish we still had more architectural experimentation in our designs like that today, instead of the commodity boxes we typically get.

No towers directly on 17th please, keep it low/mid. Towers can go a block in.

    Calgary's Residential Highrise Boom 2000 - 2025 and Beyond

Those early days were pretty fun. I remember looking forward to the weekly David Parker articles to see if there was a new development rendering that week. Somewhere in my parents basement there's probably a brochure for the Axxis. I remember spending way too much time looking through that...

Looking solid... I just wish they went all in with the brick. I'm sure it was a cost thing, but perhaps they could've taken some portion from the humongous signage budget.

Too bad about Bosa, they've been one of the more solid developers. I still remember how their Axxis project was one of the first condo towers in the early 2000s, and it really kicked things off. Man was I excited about that tower, it was such a "big city" project for Calgary to get.

    Scotia Place | 36.85m | 11s | CSEC | HOK

Personally I think they should follow Portland's example, and built a small soccer/football stadium right in University District, and tap into a younger market looking for a cheaper alternative. That or convert the Stampede Grandstand to be able to handle football/soccer/athletics (for...

It hit home when someone mentioned that the 90s are basically the equivalent of Marty McFly going back to 50s in Back to the Future.

I just took a look, and there has definitely been a nice bump since the last time I looked at comparables (probably 6-8 months ago). Not even yet, but I'll take what I can get!
