    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Some of it is just good old fashioned government policy. This area structure plan for "Crowchild 'C'": (what is now Sandstone, Macewan and most of Edgemont, Hawkwood and Arbour Lake) is a 1979 plan that says "An optimum overall density of 22 persons per gross developable acre should be sought."...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I pulled some data a while ago from the 2015 GHSL, which is a fine-level grid of global population. Here's the cumulative population distributions by density for Calgary, Edmonton (Vancouver as another point of reference) CMAs and the six US metros mentioned in the video (plus an average of all...

    Statscan numbers

US metro areas are defined entirely by their commuter sheds. CMA (and the US equivalent) CBSA aren't just based on vibes or whatever, they're based on commuting flows. The Canadian rule is that an area needs to have 50% of their workers commuting into the centre to be counted as part of the...

I hope I was one of the ones confused by the video; why would you spend a bunch of time showing renders of a design you haven't done? That makes no sense whatsoever. I thought they were going 1 for 3. (On the chance that this is a proposed design for the plaza or the reclad; if your design is...

Here's before the tree removal: And recently: A couple more shots of the retaining wall:

    General Construction Updates

Chill out, tiger. There are five (5) whole blocks of street in Calgary that do not have cars on them for less than half of the day, and even they were designed with substantial consideration for cars. We have never once designed a street by figuring out how wide the cycling/wheeling facilities...

Everytime I hear about the inverted bowl design, this springs to mind... Now that's an efficent use of space to pack in fans!

This is prep work for the Mission Bridge rehab, which also includes repairing the retaining wall, which is in pretty rough shape. It's unfortunate that it doesn't seem to include ped/bike improvements like were done on the east side of the Mission Bridge about 15 years ago.

Good point! I've annotated the 1972 photo with what the neighbourhood was developed into 50 years later. As you point out, highrise redevelopment and event centres were the only two things that were or could ever possibly be done here, so what's the difference?

    Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

I didn't realize this, but there is already north BRT construction work underway. Link to project page. There are new stations being built at Country Hills Blvd, 96th Ave, Beddington mall area, 78th, 64th, 56th, 40th and 28th Aves. The only one with a pull-out layby is 78th, which is a...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

I support the move, I hope it'll help discourage people from blocking bike lanes with snow. I wonder how this will play out .... * flashback music begins playing * * dreamy flashback music fades out * Thousands of warnings, but only a handful of tickets? 34 reported fall injuries...

    Infill Development Discussion

A question for the various folks on here who have good perspectives on infilll development: There are a handful of areas, like Rosedale, Hounsfield Heights and Roxboro (as well as the central part of Hillhurst not on 10th/14th/Kensington) that are today basically exclusively SFD. They have...

Particularly rich since 2 of these folks (McLean and Chabot) voted against the public's wishes from the most recent plebiscite (on fluoride).

The thing with operating a out-and-back service where the operator switches ends is that you then absolutely need at least the turnaround area to be dedicated to transit (since it has two-way transit service in a single lane, including a couple of minutes with the streetcar stopped while the...

    Calgary Flames Official Thread

Not a spectacular return for Hanifin either (Flames homer Duhatschek on the Athletic: "objectively underwhelming"). Interesting that with Lindholm and Hanifin we've now gone full circle on their trade; we had Dougie Hamilton and Adam Fox, we now have two mid-to-late first-round picks in an...

    Calgary Retail Thread

From the University District thread: Maybe a little of it is COVID, I think a little more is the increase in online and delivery. But I think the underlying premise is wrong. Here's retail (as well as wholesale) and hospitality (dining and hotels) employment as a percentage of total...

    Calgary Flames Official Thread

The best things about the deal are that Conroy has figured out that it's possible to retain salary, which the ownership hasn't let happen previously, and that it signals a move into more of an actual rebuild, rather than the traditional MO of being just good enough to get two to three home...

    Weather and Gardening Discussion

"What's the temperature right now in Calgary?" "Plus 11. Also minus 5." This is a hell of a cold front coming in. My condolences to everyone out there with migraines; I'm feeling a little myself. Here it is from 1 to 2 PM today:

Not a bad start on the NIMBY bingo card from the CA spokesperson: Good points raised -- the city loves to frequently approve unsafe buildings if only the CA wasn't on the case. Building code building shmode, the city says. And, yes the impact on Tom Campbell's Hill; building a tall building...
