    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I always like seeing these aerial pics, it let's us take stock of what's happening with the core. In the green are buildings built in the last 20 years, and aside from the sheer amount of builds, it's encouraging to see that most of the development has been radiating away from the dense office...

    Frontier | 30m | 8s | Truman | S2

I would love to see the city rename some of the prominent streets back to their original names. 4th st sw --> Broadway Street 17th ave sw --> Notre Dame Ave 1st sw --> Scarth Street 9th ave SE --> Atlantic Ave. Just my two cents, but I find the use of numbers for main corridor streets boring.

July housing starts out. Calgary having a cooler month after leading the country for the first half of 2025. A low number of apartment starts seem to be the main reason, so not sure if this is the start of a cooling off trend or simply an aberration. I wouldn't be surprised to see housing starts...

All kidding aside, that's not a bad idea.

A lot of the busy retail areas take the name from the neighborhood, Bridgeland, Mission, Inglewood, etc.. and some after a road like 17th ave, or Kensington. Kensington west or west Kensington kind of makes sense. West Hillhurst makes logical sense given the name of the neighborhood, but to me...

    Hampton Inn by Hilton | 56.08m | 17s | Triple One | NORR

Anytime I see a slim boutique looking building with some sort of interesting material on it I usually think of Tokyo :) but yeah, probably due to just being there.

    Hampton Inn by Hilton | 56.08m | 17s | Triple One | NORR

That slim profile and the mesh is giving me Tokyo vibes.

    General Construction Updates

    It’s a 20 unit infill. 10 units up and 10 units down. I can’t find a rendering for it.

It's definitely better than the empty lot that's there now, though it is a bit on the monolithic side. If this and Stampede Station were to be built the area would be an absolute highrise forest.

Must be levelling the area in prep for the drillers.

It would be pretty cool. The only concern might be the square footage, as the current location and the Bay building are both around 300K, but it wouldn't leave room for expansion. There's always a possibility the university could expand into the buildings next to the Bay building, or upwards a...

    Midfield Heights | 40m | 11s | City of Calgary

Nothing earth shattering, but this is what I would expect for the location. These mixed with the rowhomes, is a good mix, and a decent density boost.

    The Eden | 16m | 6s | Ascend Developments | CYNC

I usually take these proposals from smaller unknown developers with a wait and see mindset. I've seen so many of these types never materialize. If this developer can't do anything, hopefully they will sell it to another developer.

    The Eden | 16m | 6s | Ascend Developments | CYNC

True, and could be too that the developer, being a smaller outfit with less history is taking longer getting back on things due to manpower or volume. Relating to them being a newer developer it could be they are dealing with lots of changes/back and forth with the city that a larger more...

Calgary's bylaw regarding having random rectangles on buildings ;)

Not a lot of info for that one. It looks to be a 2 storey residential care building. New: Residential Care (1 building); 2-storey (11 metres) in height; and 24 dwelling units, 2,517 square metres in size. The current Land Use District allows for this type of development There's another proposal...

    West Nineteenth | 24m | 6s | EC Living | Casola Koppe

Looks decent enough, and checks the boxes. The part I'm looking forward to most is having that retail wall along the east side of 19th to match the one on the west side.

    Midfield Heights | 40m | 11s | City of Calgary

A few town homes and a couple of 6 storey wood frames would fill it out decently. It's kind of an isolated location, so at this point, the extra density will be good.
