It is a show that has aged really well. Worth a watch. Same with Curb Your Enthusiasm

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

The city shouldn't be making public comments about an ongoing application until after a decision has been made, hence why it's usually the developer or CA's perspective that gets heard.

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

It's pretty telling that there are cranes up in nearly ever neighbourhood surrounding the CBD but none in the CBD itself except for the Marriott. And apart from a handful of office conversions and renovations to cultural centres, there isn't even an active proposal on the go.

Calgary’s lack of innovative and diverse options led me to search elsewhere for the city life I wanted

Except that I wasn't talking about whether Calgary's cultural scene is accessible and nor was the author of the article.

Calgary’s lack of innovative and diverse options led me to search elsewhere for the city life I wanted

I’m assuming “both” includes myself so here is the context for why I think that article is garbage. I’ve been involved in the Calgary music scene for decades. There are people I know that could provide an incredibly nuanced view on Calgary’s non- mainstream culture-- where it has come from...

Calgary’s lack of innovative and diverse options led me to search elsewhere for the city life I wanted

Wow, a good, constructive debate about our city's identity sure turned into a hot mess in a hurry.

Calgary’s lack of innovative and diverse options led me to search elsewhere for the city life I wanted

Yes, an opinion piece about Calgary's culture from a person who lived "20-to-30-minute drive from downtown" and who only connected with "artistic people" after deciding to move because of a purported lack of culture and innovation.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I'm not a fan of Richard White's hot-takes either, but at least he is not afraid about being passionate about this city as it is rather than the navel gazing, "if only Calgary was more like Vancouver" commentators that are out there.

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

For sure, insurance is one of those things that you don't think about until something shitty happens. It's not a terrible idea if you do alot of cycling

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

That makes me so happy. That was by far the biggest hole in the SE pathway system.

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

I don't see why it would matter if the driver of the truck was at fault.

    General Construction Updates

Council does not approve developments and administration has very little input into design. The biggest factor imo is that few cities in the world have a housing market capable of supporting massive, high-end, $500+ million plus TOD developments. Vancouver is one of them, Calgary is not. All...

    General Construction Updates

Alot of suburban cookie cutter crap has been built in urban Van and Toronto over the last 20years as well though. Largely unavoidable when every person with some land fancies themselves a developer. But the comparative volume of good design is definitely far ahead of Calgary.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

So they are clearly being risk averse about the Calgary condo market, which is understandable given its state the last five years and the uncertainty that exists globally at the moment. These are hard cost estimates for 2022 I was referring to, so overall $psf would be higher when you include...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Why $650psf in Calgary? I remember looking at the Altus cost guide awhile back and they had construction costs for a highrise condo in Calgary at around $300psf. Assuming that's in the ballpark in today's market, wouldn't that leave enough room for a developer to be profitable if the market was...

    Inglewood Brewery Lands | 60m | 20s | Matco Group | FAAS Architecture

There is a surprising lack of proposals in my opinion. The Hungerford strikes me as a density grab in anticipation of the Green LIne. The RNDSQR proposal is pretty ambitious so it doesn't surprise me that they are taking their time. The Landstar site is definitely going nowhere in a hurry seeing...

    Inglewood Brewery Lands | 60m | 20s | Matco Group | FAAS Architecture

Thanks for the chart @CBBarnett! I feel like Ingewood's time is coming. It's easily the most quirky area of the city and yuppies like quirky these days. I could see a flood of new developments coming in the coming years, especially with the Green Line gets going and condo prices continue to improve.

    Inglewood Brewery Lands | 60m | 20s | Matco Group | FAAS Architecture

I really hope this project gets some momentum as that area sorely needs some love. Inglewood is already great but when I go by used car lots, storage lots and auto detail shops, I can't help but feel like the neighbourhood's potential has flown under the radar with developers

    Bowness 43 | 14m | 5s | Eagle Crest

There are lawyers and even entire firms that specialize in nothing but municipal law, development appeals and applications for judicial review of administrative decisions. How worthwhile it is for a property owner or CA to hire a lawyer will depend on the facts. Lawyers cannot and do not...
