This may be a dumb question but what will happen with the current coop space in that location? Are there plans in place to redevelop that too?

Yes, demo will start pretty much as soon as the new co-op is open, plan is currently for a single story multi-CRU building right up against 16th ave and a co-op liquor store set further back, all the surface parking is moving over to the 17th ave side.

As someone who does branding for a living...every time I see that stupid Blue Sky City sign, it pisses me off.

Not only was it a pointless waste of effort and resources just to end up with result that's worse than what it replaced, the visual and written emphasis on blue just drives me nuts. Blue is the color of the turnip eaters up north. Or Toronto. Or BC. Yes, our skies are a nice blue...but we're Calgary... our brand color is red. Flames are red. Stamps are red. Calgary Tower is red. Stampede is red. Buses are red. Peace Bridge is red. City flag is red. My face is red just writing this.

One may love or hate red, but it carries decades of brand equity for this city. In branding, consistency and repetition is king. That doesn’t mean everything must look the same, but when something represents the City at a broader level like this, at the very least we shouldn’t undermine that equity by adopting a color associated with our main rivals. Doing so would be like making Coca-Cola blue.
