Looking at that aerial shot of Olympic Plaza, it really shows how desolate and ugly the municipal building plaza is. That whole plaza needs a re-think including removing all the stairs (I would slope up towards the front doors with a gentle ramp), adding some trees, expanding the water feature to something more than just an afterthought, and incorporating nicer paving throughout.

yaman, always thought at least switch out the glass for clear if its feasible. place is a train wreck.

NO! Nose Hill is a protected natural prairie landscape. If you go up there, there are lots of wooded parts, especially on the north side.
I've been hearing this my whole life, but it's always been just bald-ass prairie to me.

But indeed, that's what I qualified my post with a sacrilegious. I know there are plenty who value its current state. I'm just not one of them.

There is going to be the permanent residential school memorial in there and there is the firefighter memorial as well, don't think the plaza will change much. Best hope is something in the triangle space that activates part of the plaza, but the walkway into the building cuts it off, so I don't have much hope.

A giant slope is probably an issue during the winter. Obviously they do and should clear any snow/ice but there's going to be times it'll be really icy and dangerous.

I like a lot of the open prairie of Nose Hill, but wouldn’t be opposed to a half dozen small forests planted around Nose Hill.
No. The park is meant to be a natural environment, and should be kept that way. There are very little natural prairie habitats left because of farming and the planting of non native trees and grasses. If you want to plant trees do it somewhere else in the city. The park already has many natural growth forests in it's coulees anyway.

We have enough prairie in and around Calgary, but we don’t have enough trees. I don’t have any issue adding more trees to Nose hill.
It would be nice to have some trees picnic areas, I mean right now it’s not very useful overall and as been said already there is so much open prairie up there, the bulk of it isn’t going to go away anytime soon.

I'm talking about increasing tree coverage with a few small groves/forests. Like increasing the tree coverage from 5%ish to 10%ish.

I like the open prairie as well, but there's a lot of it. It wouldn't hurt to have a few more trees.

I mean, Nose Hill WAS a farm. Is it more natural than other places, yes but it isn't some untouched oasis of prairie.
Agreed, there's a fairly large area that was a gravel pit, and isn't anything right now. You could plant some extra trees and put in a few picnic tables, make it a bit more useful.

That's more or less what I had in mind, some extra trees to make the park more useful and add a bit of variety.

We don't have native prairie and it's actually one of the most endangered ecosystems in the country (5% of native fescue grass prairie is left in Alberta). Wheat and Canola fields don't support the diversity of life that a fescue grassland does, so I think it's definitely worth protecting. It was used for different things before, but the city removes invasive species and plants native ones and are restoring it to what it should be. If we want to plant trees, there are so many places around the city we can do that, but lets leave a part of the prairie as it naturally exists. Insofar as it can be natural with all the people and dogs that go up there lol.

Big Hill Springs Park, which is very similar to nose Hill Park also serves a reservation of our native fescue grass and such.
Because this is in an urban area and we already have another natural reservation nearby, it would be useful if we made it into a tree park or at least had higher tree coverage. I’m all for having some prairie, even half of the park being Prairie would be good IMO.
I agree 100% about having some picnic tables or something, currently there’s nothing there and it’s only useful for people mountain biking or dog walking. That’s not good use for a park that size.
