There's plenty of ways to honour someone who is still alive through awards, jersey raising etc. Nothing is perfect because people and symbols are in constant state of being redefined.

Got a dumb construction question: where do they put all the dirt they dig up? Is there a small hill somewhere where all of downtown Calgary's basement excavations are stored? Seems like a pretty big pile of dirt they'd create for this arena!

Given Lanny's continued legacy and the state of his health, I think a statue of him would be completely fine.
 
I'm excited about the use of the seats behind the nets. I've always advocated to anyone who will listen that we need to allow "true" fans right by the ice (similar to how MLS approaches this with supporters groups). I hope we make these sections affordable which is always the concern for the owners wanting to maximize revenue.

Bring the energy from the press level to ice level and I think it will pay dviidends in improving the fan experience, supporting the team and also look great on tv. Outside of playoff games probably the most fun experience I've had at the dome is the Crowchild classic. Lets try to replicate that in a section for every home game

Someone in X threw out the idea of having statues of Iggy, Johnny and Lanny to represent the 3 “eras” of the Flames

He didn't leave on bad terms though, and it really came down to wanting to be near family.

There have been more renderings and videos shared on this forum than were shared at the event and far more detailed information shared here as well. So kudos to all of our contributors!

The only two interesting tidbits I picked up from the event was that something special is being planned for the sections immediately behind the nets ("Think Seattle Seahawks 12th man, it's going to be the envy of the NHL") and that CSEC is currently finalizing plans for a Scotia Place Experience Suite which will be invite only and have mock-ups of the seats, private boxes, loge tables etc... that will be used in the new arena as well as a 7 foot by 7 foot 3D model so people can interact with all the planned elements and provide feedback.

The Oilers had something similar but left it open to anyone in the public that was interested. It's a publicly owned building, so I don't see how they can leave it to invite only, and think that's okay.

You're completely forgetting the organization's role in him leaving. They low-balled him going into his contract year. I will never fault a guy for going where he's wanted versus toyed with and then begged for forgiveness.

Johnny is deserving of having things named after him, the community rink, as an example but they didn't accomplish much as a team with him here so I'm a bit cold on the statue.

Lanny was the captain of a cup winning team and has been the face of the franchise since. Jerome was a superstar that was a parallax angle away from bringing another cup to town.

That definitely did occur to me, think Tre offered him $6.5mil / year after he had a bad season (49pts in 56 games) before Johnny rebounded big time the next year.

Kinda nuts how far some (most?) of the loads have to go...obviously not cheap, and the emission calculations must be a little eye-watering, too
As for what happens to the soil, Hunter said it's being hauled to two places.

One is a storage site on the outskirts of Calgary. But material is also being taken to a compound in Brooks, Alta., about 190 kilometres east of Calgary.

He said the Calgary site is taking only 10 deliveries of the contaminated soil per day, so the rest ends up going to Brooks.

Not 100% sure, but it sounded like maybe only the top 2m got hauled away for remediation. The rest of the fill is likely shipped somewhere around the city and bought by other developers or contractors who need it for their jobs. I do believe some of it ends up at the land fill as well.
