Improvements to the Beltline stretch of 1 Street SW between the CPR underpass and 17th Avenue are now substantially complete, giving the full corridor a cohesive streetscape character that was first established in 2003. The work was carried out to create a safer and more inviting atmosphere for the throngs of pedestrians and transit users that travel along the street every day.

The project, estimated to settle at a cost of approximately $5 million, brings a host of improvements to the busy corridor. Wider sidewalks, upgraded LED street lighting, new tree plantings, additional bike racks, 14 new on-street parking spaces, and a centre median with a banner program have all spruced up the artery.

City and BIA representatives celebrated the culmination of the project by handing out cookies at the corner of 1 Street and 13 Avenue SW on Thursday. The following evening, an 'experiential' lighting demonstration bathed the street between 12 and 13 Avenues in colourful orbs. The new animations are designed to support a more engaging nighttime experience for pedestrians. If feedback is positive, the City will explore funding strategies to ensure the program continues.
