After theatrically knocking down the onsite sales centre for Battistella's latest residential project early this year, construction of INK in the development-rich East Village has made its way above ground. Once digging a couple storeys into the earth, a crane was erected in the spring, giving the S2 Architecture-designed building clearance to begin its 14-storey ascent.

By the end of September, the second floor had been officially constructed. But this level stands apart in its complexity from all the others. According to INK's latest construction update, the second storey is actually a major structural element called a transfer slab. It creates a solid base, akin to a table-top, to transfer the weight and support the levels of the tower above.

Measuring nearly a metre in thickness, the transfer slab is more than three times the depth of INK's other floor slabs. It also employs more than three times the amount of steel rebar, totalling 150 tonnes. The concrete pour conducted on September 16 took approximately ten hours to complete.

Residents of the 119 units, which range from studios to two-bedroom floor plans, will be afforded a collection of amenities when they receive their keys. A rooftop patio with an all-season glass lounge, a dog wash station, and a shared tool library will be contained within a building outfitted with irregularly shaped balconies and multi-coloured panels.

With INK now on the rise, the next major milestone will be the arrival and application of the exterior glazing system, which will impart the building with its glossy sheen.
