A scheduled repaving of Northmount Drive NW has morphed into a larger opportunity to reconfigure the roadway to increase safety and functionality. The City is preparing to begin construction on the first phase of the Northmount Drive Improvement Project, an initiative that will bring a slew of changes to the corridor between Cambrian Drive NW and Carol Drive NW.

A new bus bay, an advance left turn signal for transit, and nine low-cost curb extensions are among the items slated to be installed under the plan. Sure to appeal to students of the six schools spanning 14 Street and Northland Drive, bike lanes will also be extended to Carol Drive NW through the intersection at 14 Street.

Though on-street parking will need to be eliminated as a result, separate studies conducted by the City in November 2014 and April 2016 found that spots along Northmount Drive were occupied less than half the time, while parking on side streets were generally underused. The bike lanes were recommended for approval in the 2001 Pathway and Bikeway Implementation Plan and the 2014 Complete Streets Guide.

The City says the reconstruction will improve pedestrian crossings and school pick-up and drop-off zones, identify new pedestrian crossings, and improve safety by reducing vehicular speed.
