While the last decade has been one of unbridled redevelopment and change across Calgary, there is arguably no clearer metric of this transformation than can be found in East Village. The arrival of Studio Bell, the refurbishment of the historic King Eddy, and the highly celebrated debut of the New Central Library - to name but a few recent developments - have completely redefined the neighbourhood. Thus, the subject of what will be this editor's final entry for SkyriseCalgary, highlights the tremendous degree of change that has come to the area over the last dozen years.

This week's Throwback Thursday features a westward view of East Village from the corner of 4 St SE and 8 Ave SE as originally captured by Google Maps way back in 2007. Predating several local landmarks, including the aforementioned Studio Bell, New Central Library, and countless local condo towers, the above photo depicts a very different neighbourhood than the one that exists today.

Complete with highly improved landscaping, and an overall much more filled and and pedestrian-friendly vibe, East Village has transformed into an inviting downtown destination. Vibrant and full of life, East Village continues to impress, its mix of new and old, public and private, residential and commercial, to serve the district well into the future.
