Three weeks since our last update, and cladding work at Hines' 35-storey 500 Block has continued at a break neck pace. Both the tower and mid-rise portions of the 463-unit rental development designed by Kirkor Architects Planners and Solomon Cordwell Buenz have seen at least two storeys' worth of vision glass and charcoal grey framing and cladding panels installed just above street level, providing an early glimpse of the final product.

While opinions on our Forum have been mixed to say the least, it would appear that critics of 500 Block's decidedly drab exterior have pointed to the fact that the dark grey colour scheme represents a lost opportunity - especially for a structure of this size and scope. Others, meanwhile, have questioned the rapid speed of installation for the panels, the fact that this will be a rental building posited as a possible impetus for a speedy build.

Nevertheless, observers must be patient, as the full look of the complex is far from complete. Still to come are the composite wood trim accents, white-framed balconies, and the rooftop garden - all of which will serve to lighten up and soften the overall look of the project.

Once complete, 500 Block will bring more than 700 residents to Beltline, along with a host of new retail at grade. Altogether, 500 Block will be a boon to the area, the added density and pedestrian vibrancy that the project represents to be a net positive.

With plenty of changes still to come, SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
