Just three weeks since our last update, and progress at the giant-sized podium of Arris 5th and Third has been moving along swiftly. Crews have been busy helping fill out the commercial base of Embassy Bosa and RioCan REIT's 41- and 24- storey mixed-use development in East Village.

Under construction since 2016, Arris 5th and Third by Amanat Architect and Gibbs Gage Architects still has a long way to go, the podium now underway just the beginning for this large, multifaceted, project. While most attention to date has been placed upon the multi-coloured glass panels that will eventually become the face of the Loblaws City Market, relatively little focus has been placed upon the other sides of the podium.

Moving around the podium, it is quickly evident that the commercial component has many faces, with numerous volume and textural changes (sometimes two or more per frontage) to be found around the entirety of the structure. Shifting from glass curtain wall to decorative glass panelling, from terracotta tiles to spandrel, and cement pillars to rust-coloured accents, the podium base exhibits a full range of aesthetic choices.

For now however, seeing as little of the aforementioned textures can be appreciated beyond the instances of glass, concrete, and tile which have been spotted in their infancy, passersby must be contented with speculation as to the finished product. What can be said for certain, however, is that the arrival to East Village of the neighbourhood's first large format grocery store in decades will be of major benefit as the area continues to develop and mature.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
