Four months since our last update, and progress as the site of the MoDA-designed SWITCH|bloc in Lower Mount Royal has been moving along nicely. The 4-storey, 19-unit residential block by PLOT. development group has now achieved structural completion with the remainder of major work now focused on the interior.

SWITCH|bloc features a bold retro-modern exterior made up of cedar shake shingles and metallic black window boxes. Inside, the 19-unit development has been laid out in an innovative two-level configuration in which units have been split vertically into living and sleeping quarters in an effort to minimize noise reverberations among neighbours.

The unusual configuration (above) will likely help this development appeal to families with children. Located 7 St SW and 17 Ave SW at the edge of Beltline and Lower Mount Royal, SWITCH|bloc will place residents within easy walking distance of numerous local shops, bars, and restaurants. SWITCH|bloc, street view, image by Forum contributor GoVertical

While reviews of the overall exterior aesthetic of this development remain mixed on our Forum, it would appear that as the project nears completion, views have softened a great deal. Thus it is likely that SWITCH|bloc will be a popular addition to the neighbourhood once it is finished.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
