The PLATFORM project in East Village has officially broken ground. Dozens of people, including dignitaries, developers, and media types, gathered on a pleasant sunny December morning to shovel some earth and celebrate the event of this new exciting addition to East Village.
Located on 9th Avenue at 3rd Street SE, the approximately $80-million project will comprise of seven levels with a 500+ stall parkade (and plenty of bike parking), plus a fully integrated 50,000 sq. ft. innovation centre, dubbed PLATFORM, that will be operated by Calgary Technologies Inc.
The development is much more than parking for cars. The 9th Avenue Parkade and Innovation Centre will integrate a 508-stall parkade on five levels, the Platform Innovation Centre, a ground floor café, and an outdoor sport court. This combination of active public uses will help energize 9th Avenue SE, and will make far better use of a large parcel of land previously used as a parking lot.
The building, designed by Kasian and 5468796 Architecture is a joint venture between Calgary Parking Authority, and Zinc Ventures, a Calgary-based company founded by local tech innovator Brad Zumwalt. Management of the project is being done by CMLC (Calgary Municipal Land Corp), the group behind the overall East Village master plan. The building is scheduled to be complete around the fall of 2020.
SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
