While those interested anxiously await the completion of Arlington Street Investments' The Fifth, soon to go up at the corner of 5 St SW and 17 Ave SW in the heart of the Beltline, a new set of renderings and a flyover video have been provided to tide us over. Though it may not be obvious at first, a host of subtle changes have been made to the materials and textures used across the five-story, mixed-use development.

The largest change appears to be the choice of material used for the dark-coloured cladding that covers the bulk of the structure. Instead of a series of vertically arranged rectangular panels, the siding (as seen below) is now depicted as being composed of thin, horizontal slats.

Likely the most eye-catching detail, as illustrated to great effect in the video (embedded below), is the fully exposed glass elevator, which can be seen travelling up the height of the structure. Meanwhile, down at street level, the 5 St SW frontage will be privy to generous patio seating, thanks to the inclusion of a large, wraparound retail and dining element.

Moving around the corner to the bustling 17 Ave SW corridor, retail will face onto the street. Nestled directly above, a semi-private terrace will allow residents and their guests to enjoy the local ambiance.

Not to be missed, the inclusion of a sizable public art installation, in the form of a floating astronaut suspended in a glass tube, to be placed directly on the corner, will surely be another standout feature of this highly anticipated project. Once complete, The Fifth will make a nice addition to the neighbourhood, the memory the former Wave Coffee House to be well-served by its replacement.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
