A month since our last update, and progress at the site of Cidex Group's The Hat in East Village has been moving along swiftly. With the tower's exterior now nearly complete, construction crews have begun the process of finishing the podium level, with framing and insulation work now well underway.

The 28-storey, 221-unit rental tower is well-situated at the corner of 5 St SE and 7 Ave SE, just steps away from the New Central Library, Studio Bell, and the banks of the Bow River. Designed by NORR Architects, The Hat, complete with its signature "brim," has been clad to an ample degree in spandrel panelling, accented by vertical columns of small windows.

While some have come to the conclusion that perhaps more could have been done to increase natural light and views, others have come to terms with the fact that as a rental tower, there are often limits to what can be expected with this type of development.

All of that being said, most agree that the influx of some much-needed rental stock to the East Village represents a major positive gain. Furthermore, the host of public realm improvements planned for the base of the tower, including benches, art, trees, pavers, and an outdoor playground, will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
