The excitement across the city is palpable as Calgarians are just two weeks away from checking out the New Central Library. A brilliant new presence in the East Village, the New Central Library by Snøhetta has become a beacon of innovative design in the city centre, its massive scale sending a message that Calgary has become a city that cares about its public institutions.

Recent photos on our Forum highlight just how close the library is to being ready for its grand opening on November 1. Work crews have been busy dusting off the steps, planting saplings, and polishing up the public art installations that dot the grounds, the library to be spic and span ahead of its debut.

Covered in a series of geometric portholes, the boat-like library structure has been a staple of our Forum, its shape and size the topic of endless discussion. More than this, its role in the ongoing evolution of the "new" Calgary has been equally engrossing, the facility garnering widespread praise.

Equipped with study spaces, reading rooms, a performance hall, meeting rooms, and more, the $245 million library will soon become one of Calgary's architectural gems, the city having made a habit of manifesting bold designs over the last few years. The New Central Library joins Telus Sky, Studio Bell, Brookfield Place, and The Bow, all together a part of the city's recent urban transformation.

Viewed above, the New Central Library has already become a key fixture of the Calgary skyline, its place in the city to be affirmed for good in a matter of days.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
