A month since our last update, and progress at the site of Rio Can's massive 5th and Third development in East Village has continued to advance, the concrete shell serving as an effective symbol of the neighbourhood's rapid growth. Sprawled along an entire block at 5 Ave SE and 3 St SE, the aptly-named 5th and Third will eventually take the shape of two residential towers joined by a common retail podium.

The 180,000 square-foot retail component will soon be home to a Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaws, thereby filling a long-standing gap in the local retail landscape. The site will also come with ample parking for grocery haulers of all shapes and sizes.

Viewed below, the 41- and 24-storey residential towers will hold a combined 500 units, the project as a whole to represent an influx of up to 800 new residents - to say nothing of the constant flow of customers. Adding 600,000 square-feet of residential living to the East Village, 5th and Third will soon become one of the largest single developments in the area.

5th and Third will also be one of the tallest, the glass towers by Gibbs GageEmbassy BOSA, and Hossein Amanat, to rise to a maximum height of 142 metres.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
