Nearly two months since we last checked in at SWITCH|bloc, and progress at the Beltline-Lower Mount Royal area low-rise by PLOT. development group and MoDA has been swift, its signature mix of cedar shake and black metal cladding now all but complete. At just 4 storeys, the 19-unit development will be compact, yet still a local statement piece, its distinctive textural quality and unique layout to set it apart.

Despite early criticisms for what several on our Forum have described as a bland 1970s aesthetic, the recent addition of the so-called "mega-dormers," framed in black metal cladding, have added a punch of modern design to the facade.

Named for its innovative layouts, SWITCH|bloc, as seen in the diagram below, will feature a series of two-floor units, whereby living and sleeping quarters have been cleverly separated. Furthermore, this degree of separation will continue unit-to-unit, with bedroom upon bedroom and living room upon living room.

Slated for completion by the end of 2018, the family-oriented SWITCH|bloc will deliver up to 50 new residents to the corner of 7 St SW and 17 Ave SW at the border between the bustling Beltline and residential Lower Mount Royal neighbourhoods.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
