While attention has most recently been cast to the controversial big box retail development underway at the base of Beltline-area The Royal, the progress up top has gone somewhat by the wayside. That is, until now. Recent photos on our Forum highlight the progress to date, namely the fact that the 34-storey, 115-metre high-rise has now topped off, with cladding and glazing work not far behind.

Viewed above and below, the topped off tower will soon be home to upwards of 350 new residents, to be srpead across the project's 223 units. Located at the corner of 8 St SW and 16 Ave SW, The Royal is well-situated at the heart of Calgary's eclectic Beltline district, the rapidy intensifying neighbourhood having recently become a mecca for big box stores and chain restaurants, mingled amidst the boutiques and local haunts that have long made the area one of the city's most desirable.

Anchored by a multi-storey retail base, soon to become home to a brand new Canadian Tire, The Royal represents the suburban shift that has recently gripped the Beltline - a shift both welcomed and feared in equal measure. For while one can make the case that people need to shop, there remains the counterpoint that the reason why unique areas like the Beltline are the way they are is because of their perceived lack of corporate conformity.

Nevertheless, it is always nice to see progress moving along at a project like this, The Royal to deliver a high volume of urban vibrancy to the local streetscape. No matter where residents spend their money and free time, it is almost certain that the neighbourhood as a whole will benefit from the permanent addition of regular customers.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
