With less than two months to go before the highly anticipated November 1, 2018 launch of the New Central Library, construction and landscaping crews have been hard at work preparing the site for its public debut. Recent photos on our Forum highlights some of the public realm improvement work that has now been underway for several months, much of which is now close to completion.

Viewed above, much of the public realm improvement work has focused upon the installation of cement benches, pavers, and stairways, set to be accented by the a mix of potted trees and gardens. If these early images are any indication of what is to come, it is safe to suggest that the lands surrounding the new library will represent an inviting public space for all.

Moving a little to the right in relation to the first image, the close-up view above captures more of the detail work currently being put into place just outside the new library. Featuring a mix of cement and metal railings, the extra wide stairways will provide easy access for most, the fully-accessible facility to also include ramps and alternate entrance points for those with mobility concerns.

Moving to the left, the main staircase will be extra wide in anticipation of the throngs of eager book lovers who will likely flock to the new library once it is complete later this fall. Careful observers will note the glimpse of fluorescent lighting peaking through the windows. Once complete, the New Central Library will be a welcome addition to East Village and to the city as a whole.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
