RNDSQR, the urban-minded developer behind some of the most stylish new projects hitting Calgary's streets, has announced they have secured a development permit for a commercial retail project called Beacon in Shaganappi. With the approval firmly in hand, construction on the site at 3110, 3312 and 3118 17th Avenue SW is expected to start by the end of the month.

Though the building is only two storeys tall, its design gestures, courtesy of Winnipeg-based 5468796 Architecture, leave a big impact on the neighbourhood. Among the key elements is a natural material palette of bright colours, contrasting with wood soffit and glass, while the cantilevered second level shields pedestrians from harsh weather.

The building will put neighbourhood-focused retail on the ground level, creating an animated streetscape articulated by individual store entrances. Two levels of underground parking, accessed by a rear public lane, serve visitors. The top floor would give way to office spaces characterized by high ceilings, a multi-level interior lightwell, and a sloped roof.
