The 2009-built Union Square by Apex Homes won't be the only highrise on the block for much longer. A new 31-storey development by Western Securities and designed by Zeidler BKDI Architects is taking shape above 14 Avenue SW and 1 Street SW in the Beltline, finally accomplishing the intended two-tower plan that was shelved because of the 2008 economic slump.

The 192-unit Underwood Tower is named after the only remaining element of the Underwood Block, a strip of mixed-use structures built by developer and 13th mayor of Calgary Thomas Underwood. The brick facade of the three-storey surviving building served as the inspiration for the cladding on the lower floors of Union Square, and renderings show a similar architectural vocabulary set to be adopted on the new tower.

Recent photo updates from the Forum show how the concrete shell has risen beside its neighbour, with proijecting balconies extending the floor plate beyond the building footprint. A couple rows of glazing and charcoal paneling have also been installed as the final exterior expression begins realization.
