Retailers will begin occupying and taking ownership of their stores inside the Calgary region's biggest multicultural mall starting on May 1. New Horizon Mall, developed by the Torgan Group and MPI Property Group, will contain over 500 stores next to CrossIron Mills just beyond the northern border of the city.
The shopping complex is the first in Alberta where each retail store is purchased, either operated directly by the owner or leased to a separate retailer. The arrangement means each storefront can be sold like a condominium. The leasing office will also be opening on May 1st, and the mall's official opening will take place when all stores are secured.
Touted as "the most culturally diverse shopping destination in Southern Alberta," New Horizon Mall will highlight retail spaces with an international selection of products and services from contemporary design to high-tech goods.
"The New Horizon Mall is a unique addition to Calgary's vibrant and entrepreneurial retail landscape," said Eli Swirsky, president of Torgan Group. "Unlike other malls which are occupied primarily by large corporations and chains, New Horizon Mall will encompass a collection of small businesses, family enterprises and local entrepreneurs bringing unique products and services to the Calgary region."
The mall will also include a main stage for cultural events and performances, holiday celebrations and fashion shows, while a 26-outlet food court will specialize in international cuisine from national and independent owner-operated eateries.
Swirsky added: "Smaller businesses have long wanted access to the same kind of shopping mall environment and the corresponding customer base enjoyed by larger businesses. This mall breaks down the barriers for businesses looking for that retail advantage in a unique mall environment not found anywhere else in Southern Alberta."
