One of the tallest residential towers in Calgary found its footing in the Beltline in 2016, when Qualex-Landmark began occupancy of its 35-storey Mark on 10th development. It was a significant example of intensification for the property at 8th Street and 10th Avenue, where a modest two-storey office building and surface parking lot had existed.
Designed by BKDI Architects — since absorbed by Zeidler Partnership Architects — and Rafii Architects, the commercial building was demolished in 2012. The image below shows how the streetscape looked in November of that year.
The completed 274-unit project, seen below, has an exterior characterized by EIFS panels, glass and bright yellow and green spandrel accents. Retail occupies the main floor as a street-animating measure, while the tower, somewhat set back from its podium, rises above.
Not long after Mark on 10th's delivery, developer ONE Properties added the two-tower Versus to the same block. Located just to the west of Mark on 10th, the 34- and 17-storey residential buildings by Kirkor Architects brought considerable density to a site that had been averse to tall towers.
