Vancouver-based Anthem Properties Group has announced the acquisition of a 2.25-acre residential site within the masterplanned Currie community. Addressed as 445 Bishop Drive SW, the developer intends to construct townhomes and mid-rise apartments on the property, with a target clientele of first-time homebuyers and young families.

"Calgary is a core market for Anthem," said Eric Carlson, CEO. "We don't expect any home runs but are happy to chip away at our land, residential and commercial portfolios indefinitely into the future."

Marketed as a "contemporary urban village," the transformation of the 195-acre Currie site is being overseen by Canada Lands Company, which has entered into a joint agreement with Embassy Bosa to develop 23 acres of mixed-use retail and multi-family residential development.

The full buildout of the development will produce approximately 5,700 homes, 250,000 square feet of retail, 613,000 square feet of office space, and 23 acres of parks and open space. Part of the proposal includes two residential towers of 30 and 18 storeys.

The development reimagines the site of the former Canadian Forces Base Calgary, which opened as the Currie Barracks in 1933. The facility was named in honour of General Sir Arthur William Currie, decorated commander of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in the First World War. CFB Calgary was decommissioned in 1998 and subsequently acquired by Canada Lands Company, a crown corporation.
