A new YWCA facility under construction in Inglewood has received a capital injection of $8.6 million from the provincial government, funding that will go towards realizing 100 transitional shelter homes for women and children fleeing abuse and living in poverty. The Monday announcement by a hardhat-wearing Seniors and Housing Minister Lori Sigurdson was made at the active construction site at 1715 17 Avenue SE one week after the 2018 provincial budget was tabled.

The YW Hub will contain 100 single suites with individual bathrooms and access to a common kitchen and living space. Counselling, employment and training services will be made available to users, along with 90 childcare spaces.

About $20 million of the $60 million price tag is being funded directly by YW Calgary, while the remainder is collected through philanthropic efforts and each level of government. Breaking ground in the fall, the Kasian-designed project is on track for 2019 completion.
