What should Calgarians be permitted to do in city parks? For the first time since 2003, the City of Calgary is reviewing the bylaw that regulates the actions and behaviours of park users, and the advancement of technology over the past 15 years has opened up pressing questions around proper park etiquette, which could be enshrined in updated rules.

The City has already collected information and ideas from reports, surveys, 311 calls and through evaluations of other cities' best practices. Now Calgarians are being invited to leave their thoughts in an online survey that will help shape the revised Parks and Pathway Bylaw. With the recent rise of drone use and the introduction of goats to curtail the growth of weeds, the survey asks questions that wouldn't have been applicable to the early 2000's.

Specifically, the City has identified a list of activities that the Bylaw could explicitly allow in parks, depending on public reaction:

  • Events conveying the right to free expression (protests, marches and gatherings);
  • Segway and e-bike use;
  • Recreational use of small drones (less than four pounds and operating within aviation regulations);
  • Food and sport/game equipment vendors;
  • Increased opportunities for artists to showcase their works;
  • Weed- and fruit-picking;
  • Goats and other animals to control weeds;
  • Horseback riding in designated areas;
  • Tobogganing on any hill at own risk.

The feedback received will be summarized in a report that will be posted online either in the spring or summer, with the updated Bylaw to be drafted and presented to council for approval in the fall. You can participate in the survey here.
