Calgary's newest hotel has implanted itself into the Beltline seemingly overnight. Vertical construction of the 34-storey development, officially called the Residence Inn by Marriott Calgary Downtown and SilverBirch Conference Centre, was in its early stages at the beginning of the year when work on the base was the business of the day. Our last full photo update in July pictured the building's t-shaped envelope climbing into the skyline, with red and white spandrel panels providing contrast against the dark glazing. Now, just in time for the impending arrival of winter, crews have completed the structural skeleton of the building, and cladding is following not far behind.
The development is one of the largest Residence Inns in the world, filling its tall and slender profile with 390 modern long-stay suites. Guests at the hotel being built at the corner of 10th Avenue and 5th Street SW will enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi and grocery delivery, with a 24-hour onsite food and beverage market, a health and fitness area, and a roof deck forming part of the amenities offering.
The hotel also comes with a 10,000-square foot conference centre designed with ergonomics in mind. The development's second component, a 33-storey rental tower outfitted with 303 units, is still rising to the west. The residential building will contain indoor and outdoor social spaces and 7,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. GWL Realty Advisors is serving as development manager for the whole project and will manage the apartment tower when completed.
Despite its outward appearance, the hotel still has to undergo substantial interior fit-out. It is expected to go online in early 2019.
