The underused expanse under the 4 Avenue NE Flyover is ready to be transformed into a vibrant green space complete with public art and several play areas. Conceptual plans for the site were produced by landscape architecture students form the University of Calgary and grade six students from Langevin School, and the best features of the six different schemes have been amalgamated into one final design.

The barren space underneath the flyover will include safety elements and a rain garden designed to enhance the walkway between Bridgeland Riverside, the downtown core and the river pathway network. Following public feedback and technical advice from City staff, the final plan endorses better lighting for the site, new trees, a boardwalk, shipper container artist spaces, street art, and a community banner on the flyover.

Images released by the City show some of the features in action. The project is being funded through grant applications, existing City programs and community donations, and has already secured a Soul of the City grant. A local developer is also donating rocks for the rain garden, while the City will begin planting trees near Memorial Drive. The project will begin taking shape as the construction budget becomes available.
