A different kind of park will be opening up this year if all goes to plan, substituting traditional characteristics like playgrounds and greenery with a dynamic space catered to your tastebuds. "Calgary's first summer-long food truck patio" is expected to be unveiled on May 1 under the watch of Torontonian Matthew Worona, who has targeted Calgary for the experimental idea.

Noting the city's relatively unrestrictive bylaws, Worona hopes the Cargo Food Market will become "a new model for street food in Calgary." The food trucks would rotate on a daily basis, ensuring a diverse selection of food options for patrons, with up to eight trucks servicing the site at once. The plan also calls for a host of locally sourced brews and cocktails rotating through the seasons. The model could be tweaked as the project plays out, with the potential to allow entrepreneurs to rent trailers on the site.

The exact location of the park has yet to be decided, but candidates include the Beltline, Inglewood, and Kensington. Two released renderings show what the concept would look like at the southwest corner of 4th Street SE and 8th Avenue, just behind Studio Bell. The site was previously occupied by the Can Pro gas station and was purchased last year by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, which will sell the land for redevelopment.

Food vendors are being asked to apply on the official website, which will also update the public on the status of the project.
