Currently nearing completion in the midst of the Bridgeland District, situated just north of the Bow River within easy reach of downtown Calgary, the Bridgeland Affordable Housing Development by the City of Calgary's Office of Land Servicing & Housing (OLSH) is set to become a central part of the ongoing redevelopment that has come to define the neighbourhood in the last few years. Comprised of two sets of stacked townhomes with a combined total of 24 affordable family-sized and individual units, the new development highlights the high standards possible when good design meets sound city building.
Recent images on our Forum reveal the rate of progress to date, the twin townhouse structures well on their way towards completion. Set in the midst of a much larger redevelopment taking place in the Bridgeland District, the inclusion of 24 units of affordable housing is a positive sign, a step in the right direction should the City of Calgary wish to continue moving forward in a progressive, holistic manner.
Assembled as two identical blocks attached along the back by a common corridor, the new development will cater to both families and individuals, with a mix of unit types and sizes. Rents will vary according to individual needs, while remaining just high enough to make the development economically self sufficient, as the project is part of the City of Calgary's city-wide affordable housing strategy that operates on a not-for-profit basis.
Composed of an assorted mix of cladding materials from stone veneer to coloured metal panelling, the chunky boxy aesthetic of the development is pleasing to the eye, with a colour scheme featuring earth tones punctuated by orange accents that is undoubtedly inspired by the look and feel of Alberta's Rocky Mountains and prairie sunsets. Set for occupancy by early 2017, the Bridgeland Affordable Housing Development will be a welcome addition to the quickly evolving neighbourhood and a symbol of good things to come.
SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
