In the five months since our last update, progress has been moving along nicely at the site of the 34-storey Residence Inn by Marriott currently on the rise within the popular Beltline district of downtown Calgary. Developed by SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts, the latest addition to the 600-location Marriott hotel brand will be the largest of its type in Canada, and one of the largest anywhere in the world.
The most recent photos on our Forum reveal a flurry of activity on the project which currently sits a few floors above grade. The build site's massive footprint offers a glimpse of the future impact this new development will have on Calgary's ever-changing skyline.
Built right up against an active freight rail line, the hotel will occupy a large urban plot at the corner of 10th Avenue and 5th Street SW, placing guests just blocks away from the city centre, CTrain, stampede grounds, and Saddledome.
Once complete, the 390-room hotel will be home to a 100,000-square-foot SilverBirch Conference Centre, a signature feature of the hotel brand. In addition to this, the majority of the rooms will reflect the needs of a large proportion of long-term guests, with rooms arranged more like apartments than standard hotel rooms. Many will be equipped with functional kitchenettes, along with separate sleeping and living quarters. Set to open in 2019, the Residence Inn by Marriott will be a welcome addition to downtown Calgary, a city that boasts one of the highest hotel occupancy rates in Canada.
SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
