Location
Calgary
Sunalta has been a long overlooked community that borders downtown. But with ongoing developments in the community, and 10 Ave SW priming to become Calgary's latest main street to transform, it appears the community is on the rise.

I primarily created this thread since Two House has had it's official re-opening at it's new location during the August long weekend. With that, and Best of Kin opening up soon, it seems Sunalta has become Barley Belt west by having three breweries within the community this year. Once the three apartments under construction have occupancy, those places are gonna have a boom of local customers.

Sunalta's got good bones and potential. With it's proximity to downtown and its grid layout, it's ripe for more development. 10th ave is perfect for a barley belt, and two blocks away you have the 12th ave cycle track, plus an LRT station to boot.
Completely agree - there’s something about the orientation of Sunalta that mitigates almost all of the inner city’s major drawback - largely it has avoided the loud and busy commuter and car sewers that cut up or disrupt the urban neighbourhoods but offer little local benefit (17 Ave drag racing, 11/12 Ave further east in Beltline, Macleod Trail Couplet etc.)

Sunalta’s semi-recent improvements from the LRT station and the narrowing of 12 Ave for the cycle track project really set a good stage. Now with development the area is coming into its own.

Wonder if we start to see some missing middle proposals in Sunalta...
I think we'll see some in the southern portion of Sunalta, with larger proposals in the northern portion. The southern portion still has a lot of SFH's and would be ideal for missing middle type housing.

10th Ave SW is a future Mainstreets priority. As development moves west, and the City begins its planning stage for Sunalta, obvious focus should (will) be placed on the 10th Ave and 16th St intersection, with the C-train station and Sunalta Park / Community Hall acting as the main anchors for the area.

The intersection could be a potential location for a pedestrian scramble.

The Park should undergo substantial improvements, such as removing all chain link fencing, matching grade with the sidewalk along 16th St and 11 Ave, including a diagonal pathway from the 10th Ave / 16th St intersection to improve pedestrian movement to/from the C-train station, creating more of a gathering space by removing certain recreational aspects (e.g., soccer nets) and adding seating/focal point where people might eat their lunch, on top of other obvious improvements.

This is such a small park, it shouldn’t require a huge investment to make a vast improvement.

Since this is related to what you're saying, Sunalta Community Association is looking to revamp their space.

Great to see the new Two House Brewing open and packed on a Friday night. But with just the one bike rack, over 20 people had to lock their bikes to a railing, sign, tree etc.
I put in a 311 ticket asking the city to install more racks nearby and hopefully others will too - i've heard businesses are not allowed to request city bike racks but citizens/customers can.
