I was referring to the big wall on 12th Ave but looking closer if it does have ground level storefront, and as mentioned some cool dynamic lighting, it may be interesting. None of the renders show a good view of the 14th Ave side.

Thinking about it, something like that big wall might actually make sense on the 14th Ave side as it could act as a projection screen, as the planned event plaza is just south of the event centre
 
Just reupping this from long ago. You can easily see why things have gone somewhat poorly - abandoning the inverted bowl increases the footprint, and because of the longer span roof, increases costs beyond just what you'd expect from increased size alone.

Then the increased footprint squeezes the site, creating more site program challenges.
 
I’ve decided to hold judgement until the final renders are released. On first glance this is an absolute failure and a giant turd. There is nothing remarkable about this arena and it looks like a Walmart big box store. I honestly find the artistic concept rendering with the wooden roof 1000x times better than this trash. Every year I keep finding more reasons to hate the Flames. My expectations for this entertainment district have nosedived and I’m beginning to think it will end up being underwhelming and not much better than the ice district. Calgary, always taking three steps forward but one step back.

no! It’s terrible! These designers are rubbish! (Joking). We like the placeholder that obviously was an inverted design that was not remotely possible.
 
It looks like a community arena in Gatineau or something. Pissed.

“I am super glad that Calgarians got a first look at what the actual facility is going to look even though it’s still a fairly basic rendering. It gives us a good idea of what the vision is here going forward,” said Coun. Jeff Davison.
 
I think the general thing we're all concerned about is if it turns out to be something like Arris podium. A mashup of different finished materials, angles, and colors on a large structure. I still think a simple arena, something similar to the Gatineau center above with brick-styled midrises in front of the arena along Olympic Way would have been away better option. At least it wouldn't be offensive.

And you may be right. Two oversized structures, right across from each other, rarely make for a bustling area. Especially if there's nothing architecturally appealing about them. Like the BMO center renderings look great, but are people really gonna come far and wide to take pictures and gather around it? At the end of the day, we're dealing with urban amateurs here (CSEC).

the DP is going to be submitted next week, so the design is about as final as you can get. Maybe the released renderings are old. Once the DP is submitted, you should be able to go into City hall and see the plans to determine if what we have seen so far is accurate.

What is also concerning is the complete lack of retail or active frontage on the BMO center. There is just the one potential CRU in the SE corner, at the base of that fancy bridge/plus 15 feature.
 
I'd assume the design work still that's being done on the arena is swapping out the cheaper fixtures, furnishings, and exterior building materials with the more expensive options that the city cut out to reach the $575 million budget threshold. This would make sense as CSEC added money to bring the project up to $608.5 million
