Dumb question from a non-construction person - what's the point of those temporary wooden structures at the top of wood frame buildings when they are under construction? They always look the same but never could figure out why they stick out like that.
Guardrails for safety.
And not just for people. The rails help when lifting the walls into place, as they are framed and sheeted on the floor. You can see where they've been left on for the open windows on the floor below.

Ah thanks - I wasn't sure because I only notice them when they are wobbly at the top, makes way more sense now.
