guess arris shapes up being utilitarian but by no means a destination for anyone not living in the area.
Probably the case. I think EV is a ways off from being a destination area to be honest. Even when the rest of blocks get developed, it'll still be a ways away from being a Kensington or Inglewood. The River walk area will be decently busy, especially in the summer, but the neighborhood won't be a full on destination. At some point when the Green line LRT station goes in at 4th street and a decent corridor can build up along 4th street SE from Vic Park to the Bow River, that could all change. I'm pretty sure it'll be a destination neighborhood someday, but it's going to be be a while. For now it'll be a successful inner city neighborhood that will continue to evolve.
 
I agree, however all of these services coming to the neighbourhood will certainly make it a lot more attractive to buy in. The level of services is becoming Beltline-esque.
 
Also Sportschek is closing next to Winners on Stephen, so there potential for a very large retail gap along Stephen if something doesn't replace it.
Damn thats a bummer. It sucks seeing a lot of good quality stores closing or relocating along 8th ave. The Louis Vuitton from Holts relocating to Chinook was unfortunate too. Big luxury brands like LV are great for attracting rich Chinese tourists and the last thing you want is them heading towards the suburbs. Kind of creates a bleak future for 8th ave shopping. Well, at least the Winners will be a relocation within the city core, so not all bad news. I just wish the city could do more to retain big name retailers in the city centre, particularly hotspots like 8th ave.

That day has already arrived. Stephen Avenue is consistently busy every day til 10 pm or later now.

And if the lot opposite (south) of Arris ever gets developed into something with retail there's a possibility of 6th ave becoming a decent corridor. I feel like a destination neighborhood needs a corridor, or at least a mesh of 3 or 4 blocks (like the Byward Market) to become a destination.

At the very least EV will be successful as a neighborhood and a destination spot in the summer due to the riverwalk and parks. I could wrong too. Maybe with the Fort Calgary, The Riverwalk (with M2 and Simmons bldg), the Library and the NMC. that will be enough to make it a destination spot.
 
The chance of this area being a retail destination are up in the air, but it's already a cultural destination with the Library and NMC, so I would expect bars and restaurants to want to be in the area to capitalize. That being said, the bar attached to the NMC (main floor of the King Eddy) is pretty quiet, so people must not be spending much time in the area after checking things out. It seems that with the proximity to the core and stampede grounds, there should be more of a market for bars and restaurants, there are very limited places worth going to before a Flames game in the area currently.
 
I think the The East Village will be fine, but like in a good neighbourhood it takes a bit of time to evolve. CMLC has done a solid job with the planning of the neighborhood, and that will give it a head start, but it still will take a bit of time to come into its own.
 
I suppose the RIFF, or whatever it is called, when complete will be the dining & entertainment hub in East Village. The King Eddy will feed off of that. South of EV, the draw will be the Stampede Entertainment District which until the BMO expansion and new arena gets going, is just a concept on paper.
I live in east Beltline and I am surprised at how little street activity there is east of Macleod Trail, after 7 pm. East Village is much the same.
For example, I walk past Vagabonds which is at 4 st & 12 Ave SE, two or 3 times per week. If there is not a Flames game on, there is never more than a handful of people in there and sometimes no one. I don't know how they stay in business. I thought with those 3 towers (Arriva & Guardian) full of people and the casino across the street, there would be more street activity.
I guess a lot more residential development together with the new arena, is needed to really make a noticeable difference.
 
Winners (TJX) is taking over the brick and mortar retail landscape in Canada. They are the Shoppers Drug Mart in the fashion retail world. It's plausible they will add more locations in the near future instead of closing any within downtown and the Beltline. The other is Dollar/Discount stores.
 
There isn't one in Beltline and the existing one downtown is 5 blocks from this new location.

There's a good chance there will be a Beltline location in the future. Their rapid expansion has included opening new locations within blocks of older ones. They are limited on location by their large space needs. One of the few retailer in their space range that is expanding instead of contracting brick and mortar locations to online.

Thought you meant not closing a Beltline one by your previous wording.
