Yep, keeps getting sloppier.
I'd pray that those are crappy and inaccurate renders ... but who knows at this point.
I sometimes wonder why building designers don't consult forums such as this more often. Could get essentially free input, feedback, ideas, and critiques. Definitely sounds more sensible than just going forward with whatever HE thinks is right. Half these designers don't even get the vibe of the city. Would be beneficial to consult with those who are going to look at their work on a daily basis.

I guess the good news with the towers not immediately going ahead (if you don't already consider the towers not going ahead to be good news) is that they have some time to reconsider their designs. Maybe we'll end up with something better.
I've often though t that myself. lol. I'm not in the architecture industry, and thus not an expert by any means, but I think a good system for the industry would be to have a few smaller design firms that specialise in podiums of these projects. A firm whose only goal is to do a general concept of the best possible podium for its location and also tie into the general plan of the towers above. I know it adds some cost, but if the designs are only basic outlines, it shouldn't cost that much.

You’re not alone in your opinion of the podium.
To me the towers look like a mix of The typical glass in spandrel tower look (a la Union Square, Versus, Aura Towers)
The podium is very awkward IMO. Hopefully this gets refined during the build. The towers look a lot like the Versus project.

Has there been any word on whether or not they'll be going ahead with the towers too? or is it still just the podium?

According to the riocan website 1 tower may go ahead this year and thats the last rumour I heard from people working over there, but the fact there will be no sales I'm assuming it may be rental

It was mentioned earlier in the thread that CMLC is not expecting any of the remaining residential towers planned for East Village to start construction in 2018. Arris will be a condo not a rental.

Like i said earlier RioCan has a projection for the smaller tower to be done in Q1 2020, meaning they would have to begin sometime late this year to meet that deadline and I'll try to reconfirming if the rumour from the workers working on the podium over there is true because they said one of the towers may be going ahead regardless. Let's just hope for the best and see one of them happen this year if not theres always next year. Plus CMLC has had a tendency to shuffle dates around as of late, still waiting on any news on the M2 or the Victoria master plan like they promised by now.

I'm incredibly sick of the two towers and a block-hogging podium. It uninteresting. Not the developer's fault. Adding some street level variety, more density, leaving some land for later all would be welcome.

Podium is frankly disappointing by Calgary standards. Maybe for Regina?

It certainly does have an Edmonton-esque hodgepodge of nonsense at the podium level. However, Regina will not see anything of this scale in its core areas for a verrry long time. This is an entire city block being built at once.

I hope the delay in building the towers leads to a new design. As is these are awful. They're mediocre and try too hard at the same time.

Agreed that the podium is just as bad. Disappointing that the biggest development in EV is done this poorly. What a wasted opportunity.

The podium is going to see a lot of digital signs. The zoning for the parcel has been applied to be changed to allow more digital signs than would have otherwise been allowed under the standard rules. This video was shown at CPC last week, gives an indication of what it will look like. CPC recommended Council approve the zoning change:

My thoughts exactly O-tac.
It's dissapointing as hell, because they're essentially wasting a huge plot of land with tons of potential to build ... well ... this.

It's as if they were all pumped on designing this podium, then over did it ... then the day before the design was due they were like "oh yeah, we have to add some towers lol."

And to make matters worse, it looks like greed's got the better of them and they now wish to make it into a giant billboard too.
Lovely.
