Calgary & Alberta Economy

Yeah early 2030s. Current projection is the first 9 ships all entering service by 2040, and the remaining 6 by 2050. Hopefully by then we’ll have a helicopter carrier program so that we can have a semblance of force projection and an effective means of coastal disaster relief.

Pretty sure those could be built in the Saint John yard, were it brought back to life. The Aussies have a pair they half built, the Ottomans licensed and built their own as a drone carrier. A trio of those would go a long way to leveling up the RCN, and would be a huge employment boost for the region.

The amount of discussion in the media about how "Ottawa paid for an Alberta pipeline" is ridiculous. Or somehow the MOU is Ottawa giving in to Alberta, someone on CBC even said "if this is what Carney is giving to Alberta, what is he giving to Trump". We are still in the same country, CBC.

A year ago, a liberal prime minister getting a standing ovation at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce was impossible. Today, it is pretty easy to understand. I'll give Carney credit, he sees the long game here, the Trudeau liberal base doesn't really get it, but symbolism stopped mattering in November '24. Carney cannot change things overnight, let alone in a mandate of a government but I appreciate that his focus is where it needs to be.

We seem to do well electing prime ministers to suit the times. Say what you want about Harper and Trudeau but they were well suited to their era, now we're in a new era. Oh Canada.

I want to be more excited about this, but I'm not sure how much of a win it'll be for the CF or Canadian industry?

There aren't many things that Canadian defence companies make that European companies don't already cover. And on the flipside, I'm far more interested in Canada building things than buying them.

But if this is something that helps land a gripen factory, great! Just make them an 'and' for the CF.

Or if the Carney crew really wants to ruffle some feathers, could look at the J35 instead!

A place to start is energy intensive, feedstock intensive processes.

Could be interesting, if not BS. I'm a bit suspicious of this one too as the Canadian company is all of four months old, and the sole director is a former MP and current lobbyist.

Its also four years away from operating at best, so half of Europe could be eating borscht or speaking Mandarin by then, but could still be good business for QC if it follows through without too much subsidy.

Lol, gut take might be true.. Turns out there's a cover charge for access to the Euro-Boom deal. Gov isn't saying what it cost, but the UK isn't participating because of it...

A fee isn’t how I would characterize it — it’s capitalizing a bank. We could do the same thing directly via EDC & CCC but for partner projects why not make it easier and have only one financing mechanism?

The UK is in a bad financial situation. I’m not sure it is Canada in the early 90s but it’s definitely Canada in the late 80s. It also doesn’t have the degree of maturity with its institutions due to Brexity and the erosion of state capacity (the parts of the state that used to be handled by the EU). Likely they’re having a hard time deciding whether it is a good idea or not. Plus borrowing money to capitalize it might look like an expense under their national budget accounting rules instead of acquiring an asset depending on their budget presentation.

Ya I'd have to think there are a lot more political considerations for the UK. Even if the pure dollars/cents aren't a slam dunk for Canada (not suggesting that's actually the case) there is tremendous value in strengthening our ties with EU, especially related to defence. But I wouldn't think the UK is ready to dip their toes back into EU stuff unless its a backboard shattering slam dunk
